Installing A Mobile Map
While there is generally just one method in which to install a standard PC application, the same certainly cannot be said about mobile maps. Due to all of the different platforms and the different types of applications available, users are usually presented with a range of ways of installing a mobile map.
Simple Download
The majority of mobile map applications will simply make their software available through direct download on a website. This will involve clicking on a download button, before the application is then gradually installed on the device.
Platform Marketplace
The vast majority of mobile phone platforms have their own marketplaces, where users can either buy or download many applications. Examples of such marketplaces are Blackberry’s App World and the Android Marketplace. The method of installation is almost identical to the previous procedure explained, whereby users will simply select a download option.
Email Link
Certain mobile map developers prefer to email their users a download link. Most of the time, a user will visit the developer’s website, either on their mobile or on their desktop PC, and then enter their email address. From this point, the developer will then send an email that contains a download link.
Pre-Installed Software
While some users wish to choose their own third party mobile map service, it’s worth mentioning that many mobile phones already come with a pre-installed application. For example, the iPhone comes with Google Maps while Blackberry phones have their own mapping software already installed.
Post-Installation Tasks
Once the user has completed their installation of their mobile map, they have the option of altering various settings to enhance their experience. On some platforms, the user will be required to set various permissions which indicate which services the application will integrate with. There are also many optional settings that users can adjust, which are designed to make their experience much easier. One example is the ability to set their home address, which makes navigational tasks much easier. Also, some applications allow the user to create a list of favorites, which again will make navigation much more efficient.
Installing More Maps
Some of the premium mobile map applications sell their product in different sections, with users having to pay more for extra regional maps for example. Fortunately, it is extremely easy to install these additional maps, with users generally being emailed a simple download link. While some developers will sell each map individually on a platform marketplace, the majority avoid this route and decide to just email the information directly to the end user.
Installing A Mobile Map Summary
Depending on the application, users are presented with many different ways to install their mobile map device. Some developers will provide their users with a whole array of options, with Google Maps being a prime example. This service allow users to download the application either through a direct link, email link or on some phones it will even be pre-installed. However, some smaller mobile map applications will simply make their product available in one of the many platform marketplaces.
