Ovi Mobile Map
Nokia have been utilising their Ovi brand since 2008 and through that time it has become an extremely useful service for users. In a nutshell, Ovi is the hub of all of Nokia’s internet services for mobile users and as time has progressed the company have continuously added to the service. Features such as instant messaging, email, an application store and maps have arrived on the device, meaning that users now have a whole array of options available on their Nokia device.
It would be fair to say that the history behind Ovi Maps is colourful to say the least. Many people may have known it as several different names, with Smart2Go, Nokia Maps and Ovi Maps all being used. However, with Nokia ploughing so many resources into their Ovi brand, it looks as though this mobile map service will be keeping its name for the foreseeable future. What’s more, with the application thought to have over 27 million users, it would appear a strange move for the company to change their name again and potentially alienate these people.
Ovi Mobile Map Features
For a new piece of software, Ovi Maps holds a surprisingly impressive range of features with users being capable of utilising their device in a number of ways. At the moment, users have the following functionality at their finger tips:
- The application covers 74 different countries, with users being able to access it in 46 languages.
- Nokia have recently implemented 3D images into the application and while these pictures only cover a small area of their maps, it’s thought that the company will gradually increase this coverage.
- Nokia have also recently added turn-by-turn navigational features, suggesting that the company are preparing the device to advance into the mobile map satellite navigational industry.
- Users can access live traffic updates which can potentially make their journeys much quicker.
- If the user integrates the application with their PC, the software will store the maps they have browsed and make them available for offline use.
- Nokia allow their users to integrate the application with their social network account, with Facebook and Twitter both being supported.
- Users can view maps in multiple views include night mode, through the terrain or satellite.
- The application contains an advanced favourites system.
Ovi Mobile Map Summary
Nokia’s Ovi brand is relatively new yet despite the young age, the mobile giant have created a hugely popular service. There is no doubting that the map application is also very popular and the user count of 27 million speaks volumes. Having published the main features of the application, readers will probably not be surprised at this fact as Nokia have created a product that will most likely satisfy the vast majority of users. Their feature set certainly matches that of the major applications such as Google Maps and the only reason they probably fall behind such software in terms of user count is because it is only available on Nokia devices.
