Blackberry Mobile Map

Several years ago the Blackberry was seen as an extremely business orientated phone, which was simply not affordable or practical for the majority of users. However, in recent years the company have opened up their market and their platform is now used by millions worldwide.

Following these advances, it will not be a surprise to hear that the Blackberry application market is booming. Developers are constantly releasing new applications for the device and while it lags behind several competitors in terms of the number of users, there is absolutely no doubt that it is one of the most popular platforms in the world.

A lot of mobile phone manufacturers do not release their own map application but instead rely on third party software. Blackberry have gone against the grain in this respect, with the company retailing all of their handsets with their own Blackberry Maps application. The application is seen as extremely competent by many, although a lot of users still prefer to make their own choice and download a third party service.

Blackberry Mobile Map Features

It would be fair to say that the Blackberry mobile map application is not as advanced as other software, although this should be expected considering this is not their specialist field. The application still provides users with a very solid service though, with the following features being available:

  • The service uses GPS, meaning that practically every Blackberry phone is supported.
  • Routes can be planned using a simple form.
  • Users can create lists of favourites for those routes that they make the most often.
  • The application can be integrated with various social network sites.
  • For those business users, Blackberry allows employees to be tracked.

Blackberry Third Party Applications

The Blackberry App World features thousands of different applications and users will be able to locate many mobile map services in there. The majority of applications support the Blackberry platform, with the following being the most popular:

  • Google Maps – this is the market leader and the favourite alternative to Blackberry Mobile Map. Some Blackberry devices are even starting to come with this application pre-installed, with the software being so popular.
  • Bing Maps – While this is not as popular as Google, the service from Bing contains many impressive features which still make the application a favourite amongst Blackberry users.
  • Garmin – This is an application that is not free to download, although it does possess a considerably larger feature set. Users will be able to utilise their Blackberry as a standalone GPS navigator, which could be hugely beneficial to some.

Blackberry Mobile Map Summary

Blackberry are one of the few mobile manufacturers who release their product with an in-house map application preinstalled. This application will be ideal for the majority of users who do not require advanced features but a simple mobile map on their phone.
